Researching emissions from wood burning stoves

Master's students from both the School of Engineering and the School of Natural Sciences have been investigating parameters influencing emissions from wood burning stoves.

The experiments have been conducted using the newly commissioned Sustainable Energy Research facilities within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. There is concern worldwide of the impact of burning wood on air quality and health. There have been numerous press articles linking poor UK air quality to wood burning stoves. Emissions work led by The University of Manchester has indicated that fuel quality and stove design can have a significant impact on the resultant emissions.

The Master's students have investigated how user behaviour and fuel type can influence how a stove performs. The University of Manchester is working with local manufacturers ESSE Engineering Ltd to design low emission stoves that will exceed Ecodesign 2022 emissions standards.
