Radio interview: James Mason discusses wind propulsion for ship decarbonisation

23 June 2025

James Mason was interviewed on the Pat Kenny Show on one of Ireland’s biggest radio stations about his work on wind propulsion for ship decarbonisation.

The live interview focused on the urgent need to decarbonise the maritime sector using wind propulsion systems. These technologies involve fitting modern sails, such as Flettner rotors, wing sails and suction wings, onto cargo ships to harness wind power and reduce emissions. James explained how these sails operate, their growing uptake across the industry, and their vital role in helping the maritime sector cut emissions this decade to align with the Paris Agreement’s climate goals. Wind propulsion is already operational on over 50 vessels worldwide, carrying more than 3.4 million tonnes of cargo, with more than 100 additional installations planned.

The interview has been released as a podcast episode. Listen to the podcast on Spotify here.
