Dr Alejandro Gallego Schmid, Reader in Circular Economy and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment at the University of Manchester, has contributed to the UK Parliament Low Energy Computing Public Inquiry round table.
Dr Gallego Schmid provided expertise on the environmental implications of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure.
Celebrated on the 29th April in Portcullis House (London) and co-sponsored by House of Commons Research Hubs of Science Digital and Technology Hub, and Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology (POST), the round table brought together national leaders to examine rising energy demand from AI and identify pathways toward more efficient, low-energy computing systems.
Dr Gallego Schmid highlighted the importance of embedding life cycle thinking and circular economy principles into computing technologies, alongside improving algorithm efficiency, optimising energy systems, and addressing supply chain sustainability.
