Excellence and Innovation award nominations

10 October 2023

We have been shortlisted for three prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Excellence and Innovation awards for our project: 'BECCS for Net Zero'.

The nominations are for the following IET awards:

  • The Sustainability Award
  • The Power and Energy Award
  • The Climate Action Award

Our research, spearheaded by Dr Muir Freer, Dr Andrew Welfle, Dr Clair Gough, and Dr Amanda Lea-Langton, offers a model that aids industries in the UK to calculate full-chain transportation carbon costs of operating BECCS. This model, devised after meticulous high-spatial resolution biomass mapping and the creation of a digital twin of the UK's freight and CCS networks, enables industries to make evidence-based decisions. It facilitates the identification of optimal biomass resources, transportation methods with minimal emissions, and precise calculation of emissions related to CO2 transportation for offshore geological storage. Our 'full-chain' calculator is a pioneering tool, marking a significant stride towards assisting industries in their journey to a prosperous Net-Zero. Collaborations, such as our recent partnership with Glass Futures and our ongoing engagement with DESNZ, highlight the model's potential impact on the UK's Net-Zero policy and its alignment with the nation's cluster collaboration strategy.

We are honoured to be shortlisted for three IET awards for 'BECCS for Net Zero'. Grateful for the recognition and eagerly awaiting the ceremony results!
